Candidate Spotlight: Joe Denham

Joe Denham is a candidate for State Representative in the 167th District, which covers parts of Chester County.

He is the son of a proud, 44-year union worker and a public school teacher. He worked several jobs to help pay his way through college, law school, and medical school. That experience reinforced his desire to fight to make education more affordable so that all Americans have the chance to go to college if they choose.

During his 11 year service in the Army, Joe cared for the injured during Desert Storm and, in 1999, became the chief of the anesthesiology department and operating room complex at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where he received the Army Commendation Medal. After he was honorably discharged from the Army as a Major, Joe was appointed an assistant professor of anesthesiology at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School where he also worked at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Joe advises national and international medical centers on healthcare issues and is an outspoken advocate for strengthening social security and safeguarding Medicare. He believes that a woman should not have to choose between her job and taking care of her new baby and he will lead the fight for fair maternity leave benefits and be an advocate for paid sick leave.

Joe believes in putting the interests of working-class families ahead of the interests of government lobbyists, and that our economy should work for all Pennsylvanians — not just the special interests. To help improve the economy and allow middle-class families get ahead again, Joe will fight to raise the minimum wage and to eliminate wasteful spending across all departments of government. In 2013, Joe took on local politicians and beat a 12-year incumbent to become the first Democrat in decades elected to the West Whiteland Township Board of Supervisors in Chester County. While there, he worked across party lines to deliver and pass responsible, balanced budgets on time. He plans to bring that same spirit of fiscal responsibility and transparency to Harrisburg.

Joe has been happily married to his wife Debbie for 24 years and they have one daughter, Amber, who is currently a student at St. Joseph’s University. You can read more about Joe Denham at his website JoeDenham.org.

The Pennsylvania Democratic Party endorses Joe Denham and encourages all Pennsylvanians in the 167th legislative district to vote for him in the general election on Tuesday November 8, 2016.
