Candidate Spotlight: Matt Darragh

Matt Darragh is a candidate for State Representative in Pennsylvania’s 170th Legislative District.

He was born in the Northeast Philadelphia and raised in a union household as the youngest of four children. His father earned a quality wage as a union carpenter, which afforded Matt the opportunity to attend Saint Anselm’s School and later Archbishop Ryan High. It was there, in the wake of the 9/11 tragedy, that Matt developed an interest in politics and government. He would later go on to study Political Science at Temple University, during which time he interned with Lieutenant Governor Mike Stack’s former State Senate Office.

After college, Matt began his professional career in the office of the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General, where he spent 8 years, the last 3 of those as a regional manager with a hand in personnel supervision, audit review, and procedure development.

During his time with the Auditor General, Matt also attended night classes at the Widener University School of Law, and received a Juris Doctor in 2013. At Widener, he gained an appreciation for the complex legal framework that underscores both our government and many aspects of our everyday lives. Rather than starting off on what would surely be a promising legal career, Matt took that knowledge back to the Auditor General’s office and continued his work there in service to all Pennsylvanians.

For Matt, his commitment to our community isn’t about politics, it’s a family legacy. Matt purchased his family home in Parkwood after losing both his parents to illnesses. The date marked the fiftieth anniversary of his family settling in the far northeast.

As State Representative, Matt is dedicated to improving the lives of working families and to breaking the status quo in Harrisburg. He wants to safeguard and strengthen the rights of organized labor and their ability to collectively bargain. Matt believes it is fundamentally unfair that women in Pennsylvania are paid 77 cents for every dollar paid to men, and will work to ensure equal pay for equal work.

Matt has also pledged to bring relief to our aging citizens by freezing property taxes for seniors living on a fixed income.
