Centre County 2019 Election Guide

On November 5th in Centre County, two commissioners, controller, treasurer, prothonotary, recorder of deeds, and coroner are on the countywide ballot.

Winning those seats could transform the county for years to come! The positions up for grabs oversee election security and 2020 census efforts across Centre County while steering the economic growth of central PA.

Every election matters, and we’re urging the Democrats of Centre not only to vote, but to support our Democratic candidates every day until Election Day. Here’s who you’ll see on the ballot in countywide races this November and how to help them win.

Who’s on the Ballot

Pennsylvania Superior Court

Thousands rely on Pennsylvania courts for a fair shot in the era of mass incarceration, anti-union litigation, and GOP gerrymandering. We must ensure the Superior Court—our state’s second highest circuit—consists of judges who work for the people!

Amanda Green-Hawkins

Amanda Green-Hawkins grew up in a working-class union family. When she began her law career, she had the option to take a job at a high-powered law firm, but she chose to fight for workers instead.

For nearly twenty years, Amanda has defended workers’ rights in court as counsel for United Steelworkers. Now, she wants to fight for women and workers from the other side of the bench.

Dan McCaffery

Judge Dan McCaffery grew up in working-class Philadelphia and has spent all his adult life serving the people.

Currently, Judge McCaffery serves on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in one of the country’s busiest trial divisions. His record is one of sterling integrity and fairness, and he’s the only candidate, in any party, Highly Recommended by the PA Bar Association.

For Retention: Judge Anne Lazarus

A third Superior Court candidate, Judge Anne Lazarus, is eligible for retention on the circuit this November. Democrats should vote “Yes” on Judge Lazarus’ retention vote.

County Board of Commissioners

The Centre County Board of Commissioners are responsible for the operation of county government. If we keep these seats, we’ll be in control of a number of key local issues, including local election security, countywide census efforts, public spaces, and economic investment.

Michael Pipe

Michael has served on the board of commissioners since 2012, and as Chair of the Board since 2016. He has focused on brining people together to work on the challenges facing the county.

In 2015, Governor Wolf appointed Mike to serve on Pennsylvania’s Workforce Development Board. He also serves as Centre County’s representative on the Central Pennsylvania Workforce Development Board.

Mark Higgins

Supporting and highlighting local entrepreneurs and small businesses who create family-sustaining jobs in the community has been a top priority for Commissioner Higgins since joining the board.

He has helped to save the taxpayers millions through bond refinancing, energy saving projects, changes in health care coverage, and contract negotiations.

County Financial Officers

County Controller and County Treasurer are two distinct offices with one common goal: ensuring Centre County’s taxpayer funds are spent wisely, fairly, and in total transparency. We need trustworthy Democrats who will put taxpayers and working people first, not big business.

Jason Moser for Controller

Jason is running for County Controller to usher in greater accountability and efficiency in reporting to the residents of Centre County. He want residents to be able to access information easily to see where Centre County’s revenues are generated and how those revenues are spent.

Jason is currently Jury Commissioner for Centre County.

Colleen Kennedy for Treasurer

With experience in accounting, auditing, and acting as treasurer for non-profit organizations, Colleen is a great candidate for Centre County Treasurer. She hopes to bring to the office an earnest dedication to service, integrity, and professional ethics.

Completing the Ballot

Our party’s future will be built by fighting from the ground up. Democrats need to vote all the way down the ballot for local positions like school board, supervisor, and district judge as well as these countywide candidates!

Scott Sayers
for Coroner

Georgi Bennett
for Recorder of Deeds

Jason Breon
for Prothonotary
