Pennsylvania Democratic Party Issues PA-18 Special Election Nomination Rules & Procedures

The Pennsylvania Democratic Party, in conjunction with the Allegheny, Greene, Washington, and Westmoreland Democratic Committees, today announced the rules and procedures it will follow to nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy left by Congressman Tim Murphy in the 18th Congressional District.

Eligible Democratic committee people in the 18th Congressional District will gather for a convention at Washington High School in Washington, PA, on Sunday, November 19, 2017. The purpose of the convention is to vote to recommend a congressional candidate to the Pennsylvania Democratic Executive Committee. The Pennsylvania Democratic Executive Committee will then promptly consider the recommendation of the convention and submit the Democratic nominee to the Department of State.

The Pennsylvania Democratic Executive committee is comprised of one state committee member per state senate district (50 members) and the officers of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party.

Interested candidates must deliver their signed petitions to the PA Dems’ Pittsburgh Headquarters at 22 Wabash Street Suite 205 Pittsburgh, PA, 15220 by 4pm on Thursday, November 9, 2017 to appear on the convention ballot.

“The people of Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District deserve a representative who will embody their values and will fight for them in Washington,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman Marcel L. Groen. “That’s why we are taking the unprecedented step in our State Party’s history to choose a candidate by holding a convention that will be open and transparent. We expect excitement around this inaugural convention and we anticipate participation from upwards of 500 committee people. We have also engaged with local grassroots organizations and activists, and we are committed to selecting the best candidate for the people of the 18th Congressional District.”
