A Year Ago Today, David McCormick Floundered after Bruising and Expensive Primary
PENNSYLVANIA — Today marks the anniversary of the 2022 GOP primary, which saw David McCormick fail after a bruising and expensive campaign. As David McCormick considers entering what is sure to be a messy GOP primary this year, the Pennsylvania Democratic Party will remind voters of his failed 2022 Senate run and the problems he will face in a potential 2024 Republican primary.
Here’s a reminder of how it all happened — and the baggage a McCormick campaign would carry into a 2024 primary:
Despite spending over $14 million of his own money, McCormick lost the 2022 GOP primary to Dr. Oz after a brutal primary that exposed his record of selling out Pennslyvanians while raking in millions for himself.
- McCormick’s China Problem: David McCormick made a fortune running a hedge fund that managed billions of dollars for the Chinese government. Trump attacked McCormick over his record on stage and Oz spent millions on damning attack ads.
- MAGA Malfunction: Trump eviscerated McCormick on stage during a visit to Pennsylvania. Trump called McCormick a “Wall Street Republican” who “managed money for communist China” while mocking the hedge fund executive for how desperately he wanted Trump’s endorsement. These attacks leave McCormick weak with the GOP base.
- Faking It: Throughout the 2022 primary, McCormick was exposed for lying about his background. He was caught misleading voters about his history of job creation in Pennsylvania and lying about his upbringing. He ran ads wearing hunting gear despite never having a hunting license in his home state of Connecticut.
- Ripping off Pennsylvania Teachers & Taxpayers: While David McCormick was in charge at Bridgewater, the firm’s poor handling of the Public School Employees’ Retirement System’s (PSERS) cost Pennsylvania teachers and taxpayers millions of dollars. This was a key issue in last cycle’s damaging primary, and McCormick’s opponents weren’t shy about attacking him over it.
- Fleecing Working People: McCormick’s 2022 campaign made it clear he would be a reliable vote for the GOP plan to slash Medicare and Social Security while raising taxes on 35% of Pennsylvanians. He supported the Trump tax cuts, going so far as to say they should be made permanent, a move that benefits the wealthy and corporations while threatening programs like Medicare and Social Security.
