PENNSYLVANIA — We have seen Pat Toomey go to great lengths to avoid talking about Donald Trump –- everything from dodging reporters, hiding out in elevators and yesterday telling reporters he wasn’t aware what was on his schedule this morning. As it turns out, Pat Toomey did have time in his busy day to meet with the Republican standard bearer. Hedging but eventually embracing Trump is a recurring tactic for Toomey. As evidenced by his presence at today’s meeting, no one should be fooled about Toomey’s true support for Trump’s presidential candidacy.
Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesman Preston Maddock issued the following statement on today’s meeting:
“If anyone now believes that Senator Toomey isn’t fully on board with the GOP nominee, I have a degree from Trump University to sell them. Toomey’s attempts to make voters believe he’s not supportive of Donald Trump are a scam. After all, on matters of policy, the two go together like peanut butter and jelly — working to cut taxes for the wealthy while opposing policies that would help the middle class, like ending gender pay discrimination, expanding access to affordable health care, and raising the minimum wage. Not to mention the fact Toomey is undeterred by Trump’s daily racist and offensive comments, includuing a recent spell of anti-Semitism and a bout of praise for murderous dictator Saddam Hussein.
“Donald Trump is an embarrassment and wholly unqualified for the office he seeks. That Senator Toomey thinks otherwise goes a long way to explaining his record of completely failing Pennsylvania.”
