Candidate Spotlight: Josh Shapiro

Josh Shapiro is a candidate for Pennsylvania Attorney General – the Commonwealth’s top law enforcement official. As Attorney General, Josh would have a wide range of responsibility to protect and serve the citizens and agencies of the Commonwealth, including oversight of the office’s three main divisions:

  • Criminal Law Division
  • Public Protection Division
  • Civil Law Division

Josh Shapiro currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners for Pennsylvania’s third-largest county where he is responsible for a budget of $370 million and over 2,300 employees.

In 2015, Governor Tom Wolf appointed Josh to serve as Chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. In that position, Josh has focused improving the safety of our communities through better coordination and planning within the criminal and juvenile justice systems, and the facilitation of the delivery of services to victims of crime.

As a State Rep. Josh took on the status quo, wrote and passed the farthest-reaching ethics laws in a generation, and established strict new financial controls over state spending. Philadelphia Magazine wrote that he “has been a blast of oxygen in the smoke-choked back rooms of quid-pro-quo Harrisburg,” and his work earned him a national reputation as a bipartisan consensus builder.

He has earned support from law enforcement leaders of both parties for his commonsense outlook on addressing public safety. He also brings an innovative approach to dealing with Pennsylvania’s heroin crisis by treating addiction as a disease, not a crime, cracking down on drug trafficking, and getting illegal guns off our streets.

To enhance the division of Public Protection, Josh has pledged to prioritize protecting Pennsylvania’s seniors, veterans and consumers from scams and price gouging, and to take on a rip-off economy that benefits the powerful and well-connected. He will defend the rights of women to make their own health care decisions, the rights of LGBT Pennsylvanians against discrimination, and the rights of workers to organize and collectively bargain.

Josh Shapiro graduated magna cum laude from the University of Rochester, earned his law degree at night from Georgetown University, and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He has practiced law at Philadelphia-based Stradley Ronon for a decade. Josh and his wife Lori live in Montgomery County with their four young children.

He has received endorsements from Planned Parenthood, Equality PA, the AFL-CIO, and the Philadelphia Police Officers, among others. To learn more about Josh you can visit his website JoshShapiro.org.

The Pennsylvania Democratic Party endorses Josh Shapiro for Attorney General and encourages all Pennsylvanians to vote for Josh in the general election on Tuesday November 8, 2016.
