Candidate Spotlight: Rob Teplitz

Rob Teplitz is the incumbent State Senator for the 15th senatorial district, and is up for re-election in November. His district includes most of Dauphin County; including the capital city of Harrisburg, and all of Perry County.

Senator Teplitz serves as the Democratic chair of the Senate Local Government Committee and is a member of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Appropriations, Community, Economic and Recreational Development, Education, Finance, and Policy committees. He is also the founder and co-chair of the bipartisan, bicameral Government Reform Caucus.

Since being elected in 2012 as the first Democrat since the New Deal to represent Pennsylvania’s 15th district, Senator Teplitz has led the successful fight to increase state funding for our schools and passed legislation to reduce the cost of attending college. He has also secured funding for local projects that create and retain family-sustaining jobs. During the budget impasse, the Senator suspended his own pay and introduced tough measures to prevent another impasse.

Rob grew up in Lower Paxton Township, Dauphin County, and is an honors graduate of Central Dauphin High School. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, with a major in Government, from Franklin and Marshall College. He earned his Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, with a concentration in Public Law, from Cornell Law School.

After starting his career as a litigator in the private sector, Rob served for 15 years as a top advisor to state elected officials Bob Casey, Jr. and Jack Wagner. Immediately prior to his election to the Senate, he served for eight years as both chief counsel and policy director at the Pennsylvania Department of the Auditor General. He has also taught law and history as an adjunct professor at Central Penn College and Widener University School of Law.

Rob’s has dedicated a significant amount of his time involved in community initiatives with such diverse organizations as the Rotary Club of Harrisburg, Dauphin County Bar Association, Perry County Bicentennial Committee, YWCA of Greater Harrisburg, American Cancer Society, Samuel L. Abrams Foundation, Jewish Federation of Greater Harrisburg, and Dauphin County Technical School. He also devotes time each month to providing pro bono legal services to those who cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

Rob’s wife Randi is a lawyer, professor, and long-time advocate for victims of domestic violence. They live in Susquehanna Township, Dauphin County, where they are raising their two sons, Ben and Adam, who attend public schools and are competitive swimmers.
