Pike County Courier: Supreme Court Justice highlights Pike Dems dinner

To the editor

The Pike County Democratic Committee held its annual dinner recently at the Best Western Hotel to the largest number of attendees in recent history. Six of the statewide Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth Court Judges who are candidates in this year’s Nov. 7 election were dinner speakers. Justices from the highest courts in Pennsylvania are restricted on campaigning on specific issues. The six Judges spoke on the need for fairness in the courts and the need to protect the rights of all individuals.

The highlight of the evening was an appearance by Madame Justice Debra Todd, a current Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice who is up for a retention vote on the court. Justice Todd has served on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for the last ten years.

The dinner attendees also heard from Pennsylvania Supreme Court candidate Judge Dwayne Woodruff. Judge Woodruff served 12 years on the Court of Common Pleas in Allegheny County. He attended law school at night while playing 12 years for the Pittsburgh Steelers and earning a Super Bowl ring in 1980 during his rookie season.

Pennsylvania Superior Court Candidates who spoke included Judge Geoff Moulton, Judge Debbie Kunselman and Judge Maria McLaughlin. Judge Ellen Ceisler who is a candidate for Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court spoke on how this court hears issues dealing with state-related cases.

Never, in recent memory has six candidates for statewide office attended the Pike County Democratic Committee’s Annual Dinner. In recent years, rural counties are seeing an increase in persons being involved in the political process. This was evident by the large turnout for this years’ PCDC Dinner.
