Questions About Pat Toomey’s Health Care Plan

Pat Toomey’s version of Trumpcare will devastate Pennsylvania. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that 22 million Americans would lose health insurance if Toomey’s plan were to become law, including 731,000 Pennsylvanians.

Pennsylvania’s uninsured would rate would rise by 197%. Those still with insurance could see their premiums rise by as much as 288% and have their insurance capped by lifetime limits.

Pat Toomey also led the charge to cut $772 billion from Medicaid in order to pay for tax breaks for the wealthy. Pennsylvania is projected to lose $16 billion in Medicaid funding under this plan. Additionally, if Medicaid is cut, Pennsylvania could lose nearly 85,000 jobs.

So we have some questions for Senator Toomey:

Pat Toomey is on the record saying no one will lose coverage, but we now have the numbers from the nonpartisan CBO that say otherwise. Why is Pat Toomey lying to his constituents?

Where does Toomey suggest Pennsylvania makes up the lost Medicaid dollars so that seniors don’t lose funding for their housing and people suffering from substance use disorder can continue to afford treatment? Would he support raising taxes? If not, which programs would he cut to make up the difference?

Pennsylvanians deserve to know where their senator stands on this reckless legislation. Can Toomey say whether or not he will vote for his own bill?

“Pat Toomey lied to his constituents so he could give tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires by taking health care from 22 million people,” said Brandon Cwalina, spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. “Pennsylvanians deserve answers from Pat Toomey so they can learn the truth about the health care plan he’s proposing.”
